Collaborative Learning Activity

Collaborative learning in the social studies classroom helps to encourage communication, teamwork, and provides the opportunity for students to learn from one another. Teachers who plan engaging collaborative activities for their students provide a variety of learning opportunities and choice centered, many times, on the same academic standards and content.

reflective writing self disclosure

What is your experience with self disclosure?

After studying Lessons 4.1 and 4.2, spend time completing the following reflective writing assignment. Use these questions as a jumping off point for your thoughts on disclosing your “self” to others.

Choose two of the three to write on:

Have you ever said too much on a first date? At a job interview? To a professor, family member, or friend? Have you ever posted something on Facebook only to return later to remove it? If you answered yes to any of the questions, describe the experience, then explain what you learned in this chapter that might now lead you to do something different.
Have you experienced negative results due to self-disclosure? If so, what could have been altered in the decisions of what, where, when, or how to disclose that may have improved the situation?
Under what circumstances is it OK to share information that someone has disclosed to you? Under what circumstances is it not OK to share the information? Why? Why not?
Remember, reflective writing enables you to explore and think deeply about what you are learning. You’ll want to refer back to portions of the text which have influenced you, but you do not simply want to restate what the text (or videos) have said. You are attempting to dig deeper…. to wonder…. and to reflect on what you have realized about self-disclosure.  Develop (at minimum) 15 to 20 sentences for this assignment.

Ultimately, you want to make this assignment your own. Make your exploration substantial. Self-disclosure is in many ways the essence of interpersonal communication. Spend some time with this.

(Refer to the rubric for details about how this assignment will be evaluated.)

Prior to your field experience, review the requirements of all field experiences for this course. Create a document to share with your mentor teacher detailing your requirements for all field experiences for this course, as well as what is being requested of your mentor. This document should include the scheduling required to complete all assignments.

The ability to effectively manage a classroom and meet the behavior and instructional needs of students both with and without disabilities is very complex.

Choose a special education classroom, selecting the grade level (K-12) and classroom setting (resource, self-contained, or inclusive classroom) you are most interested in teaching. You will use this field experience to observe and experience the many considerations involved in that setting.

Allocate at least 4 hours in the field to support this field experience.

Observe and collaborate with a K-12 certified special education teacher in an inclusive classroom, resource room, and/or self-contained classroom on the elements that help create a positive, safe, and productive learning environment. Your final observations and summary of your hands-on experiences will be due in Clinical Field Experience B.

While you are observing, use the “Clinical Field Experience A: Observation Template” to take notes about the elements of the classroom learning environment.

Use any remaining field experience hours to assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.

At the bottom of the template provide a 250-500 word rationale why you chose this grade level and environment to observe. Summarize your findings about the elements of the classroom learning environment in the “Clinical Field Experience A: Observation Template.”

Explain how you will use your findings in your future professional practice, specifically in terms of how you will work with paraprofessionals, other faculty members, and teachers.

APA format is not required, but solid academic writing is expected.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit assignments that are print deliverables to LopesWrite. A link to the LopesWrite technical support articles is located in Class Resources if you need assistance.

Document the locations and hours you spend in the field on your Clinical Field Experience Verification Form.

Submit the Clinical Field Experience Verification Form to the LMS in the last topic. Directions for submitting can be found on the College of Education site in the Student Success Center.

inclusive classrooms presentation training

Special education teachers often provide training and support to general education teachers to promote successful inclusive practices in their classrooms. Understanding expectations, facilitating social skills, and designing and evaluating the effectiveness of positive learning environments helps all students, especially those with disabilities, learn and be productive in school.

Create a 12-15 slide digital presentation, to be given to general classroom teachers in a professional development setting, on inclusion and classroom management strategies that can be incorporated into classrooms. Include a title slide, reference slide, and presenter’s notes.

The presentation should help the general education teachers build their skills in the following areas:

  • Identifying realistic expectations for the personal and social behaviors of students with mild to moderate disabilities in a general education inclusive classroom.
  • Assisting individuals with mild to moderate disabilities to develop their interpersonal skills for educational and other social environments.
  • Designing learning environments that motivate and encourage active participation in individual and group activities for individuals with and without disabilities.
  • Organizing, developing, and sustaining learning environments that support positive multicultural experiences.
  • Using collaborative learning groups and project-based activities to help individuals with and without disabilities practice self-determination and self-advocacy skills.

Support your findings with a 3-5 scholarly resources.

While APA format is not required for the body of this assignment, solid academic writing is expected, and in-text citations and references should be presented using APA documentation guidelines, which can be found in the APA Style Guide, located in the Student Success Center.

This assignment uses a rubric. Review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

You are required to submit assignment to turnitin and attach report.
