Week 3 Chapters 1 to 4

Can Research Rescue the Red Cross?  

Abstract: The American Red Cross seemed in its true element following September 11, 2001. It was flooded with donations to do its highly needed and regarded work. Most of those donations went to its Liberty Fund. But shortly after it started to disperse the funds, the media began asking questions. And the American Red Cross soon wore a patina of tarnish. Learn about the research that evaluated Americans perception of the Red Cross and how research by Wirthlin Worldwide helped craft a new and highly effective donation solicitation process. ;

This article assignment relates to an interesting story regarding Carlos Ghosn who previously masterminded the successful turnarounds of both Nissan and Peugeot and then became the CEO of both companies as well as helping Mitsubishi.  Mr. Ghosn was known as a workaholic CEO and would fly back and forth (6,000 miles one way) each week between Tokyo and Paris where the companies are headquartered. He was considered a pioneer CEO with great vision and commanded a large compensation package. Then, in November 2018, Mr. Ghosn and a Nissan executive, Greg Kelly, were suddenly arrested after landing in Tokyo on charges of Mr. Ghosn understating his tax obligations. One of the primary tax issues in this case related to deferred compensation (Chapter 13 material) and it’s disclosure. Mr. Ghosn and his aide, Greg Kelly, claim that they did nothing wrong.  Mr. Ghosn believed that he would not be able to provide an adequate defense for his position and there was much publicity to support him regarding the alleged unfairness of the Japanese  prosecution system regarding Mr. Ghosn’s treatment as compared to US prosecutions. (Over 99% of cases that go to trial in Japan result in a conviction, usually based on a confession.) We don’t see anything like that conviction rate in the US trial system. 

Then, on New Year’s eve of 2020, Mr. Ghosn arranged a daring escape to his birth home in Lebanon with the help of a team of people including a former green beret literally involving planes, trains and automobiles and a large musical box. He is currently still residing in Lebanon.

In the 1990’s when the business world first heard about Emotional Intelligence (EI), it was viewed as something unique to an individual, but realistically work is completed by groups and teams; EI should be considered as a critical component of how well teams perform (Druskat & Wolff, (2015). Comprehensive EI of team members supports group identification and trust among members; productivity is positively affected which leads to greater creativity and innovation. EI of a group requires a conscious discussion of emotions among group members so that knowledge of how work and end results are affected can be understood and discussed by team members (Druskat & Wolff, 2015); it’s important not to sweep members’ emotions under the rug after they suddenly surface but rather address them up front, understand each other, and work to make your group its best.

Since we know that EI is important for teams, just as it is with leaders, please consider the following question:

How do you think that EI in a leader, whether high or low (you choose) affects the EI of a team? Does a leader with high EI automatically inspire the team to address emotions, or is there more work to be done? Please share your thoughts as well as your experiences.
